Abstract
Kanghwa-Goon is located in the western part of Kyunggi-Do and is consisted of several islands. The main island neighbours on Kimpo-Goon with a narrow sea between the both Goons. Kanghwa-Goon contains 12 Myuns, Hwado, Yangdo, Kilsang Bool-eun, Sunwon, Kanghwa, Songhae, Hajum, Yangsa,Naeka, Kyodong and Samsan .
Kimpo-Goon is located in the western part of downstream of the Han river, and borders on Inchun cityand Boochun-Goon on the south, with Koyang-Goonand Seoul on the east. Kimpo-Coon contains 7 Myuns, Kochon, Kimpo, Hasung, Wolkut, Yangchon, Daekut and Keumdan. Each Myun has about 10, 000~15,000 population and has 5 to 10 Ris.
This study was directed to these Goons as a Part of the program of studying directly making a trip to each Myun in every Goon in Kyunggi-Do as finding out the districts which have the crayfish and crabshaving Paragonimus metacercaria is urgent because many children in rural areas eat raw and slightly roasted crayfish and crabs and there is a traditional custom in Korea of taking raw crayfish juice for the treatment of measles, producing many public health problem.
One primary school from each Myun was selected and the pupils in older age groups were tested for this study being asked about their custom raw and inadequately cooked crayfish and crabs and their environmental situation regarding drinking water, and testing them with Paragoninlus and Clonorchisantigen. The crayfish and crabs caught from these Myuns were examined for Paragonimus metacercaria.
Those children who ate raw crayfish were ranged from 0% in Yangsa-Myun, and Hwado-Myun to13.0% in Booleun-Myun, Kanghwa-Goon and from0% in Kochon, Kimpo, Yangchon, and Keumdan-Myun to 11.6% in Daekut-Myun, Kimpo-Goon. Those who ate poorly roasted crayfish were ranged from 27.3% in Sunwon-Myun to 81.5% in Naeka-Myun in Kanghwa-Goon and from 0% in Kochon-Myun to 48.0% in Daekut-Myun, Kimpo-Goon. Those who ate soysouce soaked crabs were ranged from 27.2% in Hajum-Myun to . 95.5% Songhae-Myun, Kanghwa-Goon and from 88.5% in Keumdan-Myun to 96.2% in Yangchon-Myun, Kimpo-Goon. Those who ate poorly roasted crabs were ranged from 0% in Hwado, Yangdo-Myun, to 40.2% inSonghae-Myun, Kanghwa-Goon and from 19.2% in Darkut-Myon to 51.4% in Wolkut-Myun, Kimpo-Goon. Those who ate raw crabs were ranged from0% in Hajum, Yangdo-Myun to 29.6% in Booleun-Myun, Kanghwa-Goon and from 0% in Kochon-Myun to 10.6% in Daekut-Myun, Kimpo-Goon. Noone drank the water on stream in both Kanghwaand Kimpo-Goon. The children drank the water from shallow wells were ranged from 13.0% in Booleun-Myun to 50.8% in Naeka-Myun, Kanghwa-Goonand from 1.9% in Yangchon-Myun to 17.3% inWuolkut-Myun, Kimpo-Goon .
The positive rate with Paragonimus skin testswas showing as 1.0% In Hwado, 10.2% Yangdo,14.1% Kilsang, 8.7%, Booleun, 2.0% Sunwon, 1.7%Kanghwa 2.3% Songhae, 11.8% Hajum, 6.5%Yangsa, 6.9% Naeka and 16.2% in Kyodong-Myun,Kanghwa-Goon and as 0% in Kochon and Keumdan-Myun, 0.9% in Kimpo-Myun, 1.4% Hasung, 1.2% Wolkut,0.4% Yangchon and 0.5% in Daekut-Myun,Kimpo-Goon. The infestation rate of crayfish withParagonimus metacerraria was 0.3 In in Yangdo-Myun, 0.6% in Kilsang-Myun and 0.4% in Booleun-Myun, Kanghwa-Goon and didn¢¥t examine any crayfish from Kimpo-Goon, since the positive rate withParagonimus skin test was so low.
The custom of taking raw crayfish juice for thetreatment of measles is prevalent in these Goonswhich may give many harmful effects to growingchildren. I wish the public health authorities andthe school authorities in these Goons would striveto eradicate this bad custom.
